Bronze Award Service Project

The girls started working on their Bronze Award Service Project. They are making little pillows and bean bags for the Lovelace NICU. I talked to the women in charge of the NICU again yesterday and she was so excited that the girls were making these items for the babies.

I think it was a great idea to work with Lovelace. Savannah's sister was just released from Lovelace nicu and Kellsie's brother was in the Lovelace nicu for a couple weeks. Brianna and Joann's nephews were born at Lovelace hospital. So the some of the girls already have a connection to the hospital.

The girls worked hard. They learned how to cut a basic pattern, cut the fabric, pin and sew. I was impressed! YOU GIRLS ROCK!!!

Give Three!

We are working with our Service Unit and with council on a new and fun service project. It is called "Give Three". Each month our service unit choose a charity or organization to help. Each Girl Scout has been asked to donate three items for that organization. 3 Packs of Bubble Gum, 3 Used or new books, etc.

These items are due at the 2nd Troop meeting of the month. The information is on the Troop Calendar (in the info section for the 2nd troop meeting) and on the calendar that your daughter filled out at the first meeting.

We will then give the items to the troop in our service unit who is in charge of the organization that month. Your items will be added to our troops, who will be added to our service unit troops.

We are excited about this project. If you have any questions, please call me or Laurel.

Planning Meeting

Our planning meeting went great!
Each of the girls picked their favorite badge to do and planned the troop meeting to do it at. They also wanted more Service Projects. We added some of those in on a couple of Saturdays and the Giving Tree will be in December on a school night. More information to follow.

They are earning their Bronze Award this year as a troop. This is the highest level a Junior Girl Scout can earn. This is a very big deal and will go on their college and job resumes. They have completed everything but the 15 hour Service Project. They have chosen to sew bean bags for the NICU at the local hospital. When we do these activities at the troop meeting we added 1/2 hour to the time (6pm to 8pm). If your daughter cannot attend one of these troop meetings or one of the ones planned on a Saturday, that is ok. But to earn the award, she will need to make up those hours on her own. She can take home supplies and do them with you.

Take note of the Mag nut sale dates in October and the Cookie Sale dates in January. We will also be having a Golden Corral Fundraiser on October 19th. Please start having your daughters tell their teachers, friends and families to put this on their calendars. We will have flyer's soon.

Check on the right of the website for the Troop Calendar. Click on the day of the event to see who has snack and other information.

Sleep Over at the Explora

This year the girls who sold over 200 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies got to go on a cool event that they choose. Our girls choose to go to EXPLORA and have a sleep over. We got there at 6:30pm, had a snack and went out to the exhibits to play. At 7:45pm we ate pizza and then went to more classes. We watched a movie and went to bed (well, that was suppose to be the plan). Allyson at breakfast.
Savannah using electricity to move the soda can. She was in a race with Kellsie and three other girls to see who could move their can the fastest.

Mariah and Joann at exhibits.

Kellsie and Jessica...just having fun.

Joann getting ready for the next class. They woke us up at 7pm, to clean up our stuff and eat breakfast. Then we were able to play at more stations until pick up time. Some of the taller girls were able to ride the bike if they had time or wanted to. Kellsie was able to stay and ride the bike.
We had a blast! Thanks to Ms. Summer who came and helped. The girls had fun and learned (but I dont' think they understood that part).

Sleeping at Explora...WHATEVER!

Lights out were at 10:30pm, we went to bed a little late because the movie went longer. So we were in sleeping bags by 11pm. I stopped looking at the clock at 12:45am, so I am not sure what time we ended up going to bed.

Most of our girls stayed up to read books (what amazing girls we have). And just as a side note, prego women should not sleep on the floor in their last trimester.

Classes at explora

We went to a class on electricity.
We went to the "Air" area
Jess trying to blow the paper off without blowing directly on it. VERY HARD!

Savannah trying to count all the gum balls.

Girls had to blow bubbles and keep the bubbles up in the air for as long as possible using only their hands and not touching the bubbles.

Experiments at Explora

One of the work shops was on electricity...need we say more?

Allyson trying to fill up the bag with one breath of air. I think she was the closest.

More Explora Pics

The girls really wanted to sleep in the mirrors area, but another troop had already claimed it and it only fit about 4 girls anyways. Bummer...

Here is a pic of all the Girl Scouts who attended the Sleep Over Event. I think there were three or four troops there. Perfect size to have fun!
